Development of TJ-type Buckling-Restrained Braces and Application

Buckling restrained brace (BRB) has been rapidly and widely accepted by scientific and engineering community worldwide, due to its excellent seismic performance. Two TJ-type BRBs were newly developed at Tongji University. TJI-type was designed for small tonnage applications while TJII-type for large tonnage ones. Full scale cyclic test results demonstrated stable hysteretic behavior and substantial energy dissipation capacity of the BRBs. The application of TJ-type BRBs in moment frames was compared with that of ordinary braces in concentrically braced frames (CBF) by means of detailed investigation on a typical building of 8 stories. Nonlinear time history analysis showed that BRB frame can perform better than CBF, under design and rare earthquake. As an alternative application of BRBs, the structural system of simple-connected steel frame with buckling restrained braces was proposed for multi-story buildings. By static and time-history analysis, the seismic behavior of this system was investigated. The results showed that this system had energy-dissipation behavior as good as steel moment frame. The elasto-plastic behavior of this system was also verified by shaking table test.
