OINVESTIGATION OF CIGARETTES AS AN IGNITION SOURCE FOR COLEMAN FUEL

Establishing a competent ignition source is a critical part of any fire investigation. While it isrngenerally recognized that cigarettes are unlikely ignition sources for common ignitable liquids, thernexperimental data on specific fuels is limited. This study examined the propensity of cigarettes tornignite Coleman camp fuel in two configurations - clothing soaked with Coleman fuel and pools ofrnColeman fuel. The first configuration involved a clothed mannequin splashed with Coleman fuel andrnsubjected to a variety of cigarette exposures, including thrown cigarettes, direct contact with litrncigarettes, and direct contact with lit cigarettes under draw. In the experiments that exposed cigarettesrnto pools of Coleman fuel, cigarettes were placed on a screen above the liquid surface and werernallowed to burn their entire length while the lit cigarette was under draw. A total of 16 experimentsrnwere conducted, with each involving multiple cigarette exposures. No ignitions of Coleman fuel vaporrnwere observed in approximately 530 cigarette exposures.
