It is intended to demonstrate in which way systematics can be applied to information science. Systematics, as the science and practice of classification, is understood to be a method to arrange and order the so-called "systematic units". In Biology, these "systematic units" are parts of living beings, sometimes considered as individual elements, sometimes as species, or as an ensemble of elements. By extrapolation it is possible to compare systematic units with "conceptual units". These can be contained in "language units", which can be expressed by words. Systematic units in knowledge organization will therefore be the words -key words- representing the meaning of a document, or the set of words -species- forming a document.rnAn attempt is made to demonstrate that "traditional systematics", or formal systematics, can be applied to the great classification methods such as: Dewey, UDC, Library of Congress and UNESCO. "Numerical systematics", or relation systematics, has a parallelism with the facet classifications. "Cladist systematics", or interconnected systematics, is suitable forrnapplication to the key word methods of classification or, in other words, the theory and use of thesaurus.
