Although web-based education has become a very important branch of educational technology and has been used for various disciplines, web-based control experiments for distance education are still unusual. This paper describes the characteristics of web-based distance experiment system. Based on these characteristics, the architecture of remote control experiment system is proposed. Also, the design issues of a web-based remote control experiment system for distance education, including software architecture, network communication architecture, web-based interface design, have been discussed in detail. A water tank control process in our control laboratory is used as a case study to illustrate the methods descibed for designing a web-based remote control experiment system.
