Ultra high performance fiber reinforced concrete has been used as support plates for the strengthening of a reinforced earth wall in Reunion Island. Use of RPC proposed by the contractor Intrafor and accepted by the Reunion Island Road Administration was chosen for its mechanical properties and durability. RPC replaces cast iron crosses which are more expansive and have to be painted regularly. 6,000 plates were placed after a stringent serie of tests and controls by the contractor and the client, to check the system's ability to stabilize the wall without any risk of rupture of the concrete panels of the surface. Mix uses mainly polymer fibres as well as stainless steel for the parts subjected to greater loads. The Reunion Island experience proved the efficiency of the use of ultra high performance fibre-reinforced concretes for the strengthening of reinforced earth walls, and large scale industrial production can now be launched.
