To compete successfully in the increasingly intensive global competition, a company needs to bring its new products to the marketplace quickly. In recent years, more attention have been paid to new product development (NPD) time. This paper presents a systematic study on the techniques for reducing NPD time. Based on literature review and case studies in some Chinese manufacturing companies, we put forward a framework. It consists of three parts: environmental factors, acceleration techniques, and development time as the outcome. The main idea of the framework is that environmental factors influence the effect of the acceleration techniques on reducing NPD time. We will then discuss the main parts of the framework and go into the details on the influence of environmental factors on the suitability of the acceleration techniques.
