Geochemical studies of Tertiary and Mesozoic sediments of Kutch Basin, India

Good potential source rocks associated with oil prone Type Ⅱ and Ⅲ kerogens have been identified in the Mesozoic sediments of Kutch Basin. The central part of the basin had an abundance of poor quality terrestrially derived gas prone kerogens and geothermal histories remained unfavourable to cause thermal maturation of organic matter. However, development of good source bed sequence with inadequate to significant maturation for hydrocarbon generation with secondary enrichment of hydrocarbons has been established in the Tertiary and Cretaceous sequences in the offshore area. Improved quality of organic matter deposited in the reducing environment is envisaged.
