On Video-On-Demand Servers with Hierarchical Storage

To support large scale video-on-demand services, video storage servers must exploit tertiary storage systems for them to be cost effective. In this paper, we study two aspects that should be considered in designing a video storage server with hierarchical storage. First, we propose a new admission control policy to determine when a request should be admitted to the tertiary storage component. A novel feature of the tertiary storage component. A novel feature of the proposed algorithm is that it is adaptive and robust to the system load. Requests may be admitted without sacrificing the quality of service even when their bandwidth requirements are not met. Second, we study several disk management algorithms for managing the disk space that is assigned as cache for the videos stored in the tertiary storage. We conducted a simulation study and our results show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques in terms of throughput and average waiting time.
