As a result of increased customer demand for consistent attainment of high product quality. coupled with increasingly stringent safety and environmental regulations, and intensified global competition, the current drive in the chemical and allied industries has been towards more efficient utilization of existing assets (especially capacity and energy) rather than new capital expenditure. The result is that a growing number of industrial processes must now operate under conditions that emphasize their inherent nonlinearities. Non-linear control is thus becoming more important in industrial practice. This paper assesses the current status of nonlinear control applications in the chemical industry; discusses some of the most pertinent issues of; and barriers to, practical implementation; and presents two complementary industrial applications of nonlinear control to illustrate the main point.
