A 35-GHZ CLOUD PROFILING RADAR FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in collaboration with the MeteorologicalrnService of Canada (MSC) have installed a 35 GHz cloud profiling radar (CPR) on the NRCrnConvair 580 (CV580) aircraft. The radar has been used for the remote sensing of clouds forrnatmospheric research purposes. Science Engineering Associates designed and built this system.rnThe CPR consists of down-looking and up-looking antennae that are installed within the wingrnroots external to the fuselage. Radar data collected during the 2000 Canadian HurricanernExtratropical Transition study, which was conducted on October 19, 2000 to study thernextratropical transition of hurricanes when they reach Canadian waters, is presented in this poster.rnThe CPR provided detailed information of cloud structure and intensity along the CV580 track.rnThe result also indicates fine-scale cloud structure that correlates with other in situ measurements.
