This paper presents an attempt to address the problem of power control at the network layer by proposing a novel protocol called ZONEPOW for Ad Hoc Mobile Networks. The aim of ZONEPOW is primarily to increase the overall traffic carrying capacity of the network. The solution to the power control problem is based on (ⅰ) the search for a common power level limited to discrete zones that proactively guarantees connectivity within the zone, and (ⅱ) an appropriate, reactive forwarding procedure for any out of zone traffic. Being a hybrid power control protocol ZONEPOW is suited for ad-hoc networks and it is particularly attractive in networks where communication between hosts is mostly localized and communication across zones is comparatively rare.
