Increasingly, engineering design is pushing materials into situations where procedures based solely on fatigue are inappropriate. In particular, there can be significant interactions from time dependent damage mechanisms including environment and creep. The paper explores such interactions in relation to the high performance titanium alloys used in gas turbines and related applications. It is shown that they can be important for the full temperature regime over which these alloys see service. Their effects can impact significantly on the safe design of components experiencing cyclic loading.
