The Robotics Crosscut Program (RBX), workingrnwith the TRU Mixed Waste Focus Area (TMFA),rnstarted a multi-lab development effort for a remoternsystem to repackage drummed mixed wastes to meetrnthe Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) wasternacceptance criteria. Multiple DOE sitesa have beenrntasked to develop the Handling and SegregatingrnSystem for 55-Gallon drums (HANDSS-55) of mixedrnwastes for potential use at multiple waste storage sitesrnwith initial deployment at the Savannah River Sitern(SRS). The HANDSS-55 is being developed as arnremotely operated, modular system that opens 55-rngallon drums, sorts and segregates the drum contents,rnand repackages the contents into new 55-gallon drumrnliners. The HANDSS-55 can be broken into five mainrnareas: (1) the Waste Sorting and Segregation Module,rn(2) the TRU-Waste Repackaging Module (TWRM), (3)rnthe TRU-Waste Transfer System, b (4) the Glovebox,crnand (5) the System Integration and Controls Modulern(SICM). The modular concept requires that allrndeveloped modules/components be integrated into arncomplete operational system. System integrationrnbegan with identifying the subsystems required to linkrnthe identified modules together, and then developingrnthe design requirements for each subsystem. Linkingrncomponents were then developed to meet the identifiedrnrequirements. A solids model component envelopernwas developed to establish the geometric criteria forrneach subsystem that would allow integrating eachrnsubsystem into a single operational system. System operation flow diagrams were also developed tornidentify the steps and component interactions requiredrnto repackage 55-gallon drums. Solids modeling isrnbeing used to aid in the overall system integration.rnSolids models are incorporated into the componentrnenvelope to help ensure that the final system fits withinrnthe geometric constraints placed on the overall design.rnThis paper presents the methodology used to integraternthe identified areas into the HANDSS-55 system;rnidentifies the methods used to reduce the technical andrnprogrammatic risk associated with the development ofrna new one-of-a-kind complex system for use inrnoperations; and describes the Process Waste ReductionrnModule (PWR) as a volume reduction tool, saving costrnand reducing Personnel Exposured.
