In electrochemical reactions, Lorentz forces due to external homogeneous magnetic fields may lead to increased mass transfer as additional convection is forced (MHD effect). A careful analysis shows that often a three-dimensional modeling of this effect is necessary. We present numerical simulations of copper electrolysis in cuboid cells under the influence of homogeneous magnetic fields of vertical direction in the limiting current regime. The Lorentz force is found to drive horizontal counter-rotation which is stronger than the natural convection. Experimental results confirm the numerical findings.
