DP incidents on mobile offshore drilling units on the Norwegian Continental Shelf

The aim of this paper is to analyze DP incidents on mobile offshore drilling units on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Based upon this incident analysis, measures to reduce DP incidents in the future are identified. Definitions and criteria used for incident data collection, and lessons learned, are discussed. Based on the developed approach, the DP incidents that resulted in loss of position are further analyzed. Three weak areas are identified. They are erroneous position data, the ability of DP software to handle such erroneous position data, as well as competence and management of key DP personnel.
