Out of Industrie's point of view the most important issue in solar cell manufacturing is the over all cost effectiveness of established or future technologies and required equipments. Therefore this paper will give a short overview on such aspects, exemplified on solar cell edge isolation. This in principal easy and "low cost" process step has nevertheless driven a still ongoing development in solar cell production. New processing technologies as well as high throughput equipments have been developed recently. In more detail we will compare the baseline technique of plasma etching to laser scribing in the production environment of Deutsche Cell GmbH.
