Minimization of Erosion in Channels by the Use of Economic CFD

The potential of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as a practical tool for minimizing erosion in channels for gas-solids flows in industrial practice is considered. As an example it is investigated a complex crude gas channel, which leads to a baghouse filter for cleaning 185000 m_(eff)~3/h hot gas. In this channel strong erosion damages appeared at different locations. To solve this problem it has been performed an economic CFD simulation for analysing the reasons. The gas flow field is calculated within short times and with sufficient accuracy by making use of well known empirical correlations for the gas flow pattern in different channel segments, such as linear sections, bends (with and without vanes) and branches. The particle trajectories are calculated by a Lagrange method. The influence of turbulent fluctuations on the disperse phase arc described by a stochastic model. The simulated particle concentrations and shear stresses correspond well to the observed erosion areas. On this basis the erosion damages could be clarified and the channel geometry has been modified.
