Geotechnical aspects of tunnelling, reuse of foundations and building on landfill in brownfield development

Construction on brownfield sites places special constraints on development. Perhaps the main message from these case histories is that our greenfield sites of today will be the brownfield sites of tomorrow; everything that we do to the ground may have repercussions in the next generation of development. In order to protect land values and provide opportunities for future redevelopment we should consider carefully what we do now, particularly in limiting the use of buried concrete where possible and in taking and preserving good construction records.
