Both the investigations and the analysis univocally proved that application of even the most advanced instruments for in-situ tests can lead to considerably different evaluation of the subsoil geotechnical parameters. A consequence of this fact may be serious in construction design work. Particularly important is the problem of standardization and calibration of the equipment for field tests and, probably, for laboratory studies. It can be supposed, as stressed out in the report by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and the Department of Geotechnics, Agricultural University, Poznan, Poland, that in case of different subsoil the evaluation of discrepancies between the CPTU test parameters would also be different. However, it seems that a very important element of research into non-standard tailings from which man-made dumps are constructed, their strength parameters, should be determined with the instruments which have been previously calibrated. In the calibration process other research methods should be applied, e.g. laboratory experiments and, so called, local correlation relationships.
