Deformation patterns in sand beneath shallow foundations subjected to vertical loading

Two separate and relatively new optical measurement techniques are employed to observe soil displacement patterns beneath a laboratory-scale surface strip footing founded on dense sand. The movements measured using both techniques are seen to compare well with each other and are compared with expectations from standard bearing capacity theory.
