The optimal production planning and scheduling in multipurpose process plants involvesrnthe efficient utilisation of assets and resources to produce a number of products so as tornsatisfy market demands while optimising a performance related criterion (e.g. profitability).rnHowever, the degree of utilisation of process plant components, within the time horizon ofrnoperation, critically depends on the level of availability of the equipment. The interactionsrnbetween production and maintenance planning are studied in this paper.rnIn this work, a general optimisation framework is proposed incorporating both thernmaintenance as well as the production planning model thus providing the necessary links tornquantify the strong interactions between them. The applicability of the proposed framework isrnillustrated by a motivating example.
