For more than 20 years the industrial laser technology has been funded in many countries. Naturally, a lot of characterization work has been done to determine laser beam characteristics. Additionally, with increasing laser beam power the importance of the optical components used with lasers has been recognized. Therefore, the development of test methods for characterizing laser beams as well as optical components has been supported in a lot of national laser projects in different countries. First attempts of common definitions and measuring techniques were made in some European projects (e.g. EU 194).
