Laser welding has gained permanent acceptance as a precision welding process in modern manufacturing. The advantages of this process, including high weld speed, capacity for automation, low heat input and little need for rework, are welcome especially in sheet metal processing. In many instances laser welding butt joints in sheet metal is desired. Due to the low disturbance of the lines of force, the strength of butt weldments is higher especially under dynamic loads than is the case for lap or edge weldments. At the same time, the amount of material used can be minimized, thereby resulting in lighter construction.
