Use of material models for elastomer foams in ABAQUS and LS-DYNA

Elastomer foam materials are shock absorbers that could be used to attenuate severe impact shock in military and civilian applications. FEM simulation plays an important role in helping the designers to determine the best elastomer foam material and the best structure of a shock absorber. In consequence, the foam material models need to be defined to meet the needs of FEM simulation. In this article, the material models in ABAQUS and LS-DYNA that could be used to model elastomer foams have been reviewed. Experimental tests for collecting input test data for building material model input decks have been recommended. Input decks for these material models have been developed. Experimental verification tests have been conducted to evaluate the performance of these material model input decks. Comparison of simulation results with the verification test data has been presented.
