SAR Instruments in the Context of Earth Explorer and Earth Watch Programmes

The future ESA Earth Observation missions beyond ENVISAT, METOP and MSG will be implemented as Earth Explorer and Earth WAtch missions. This paper summarises the on-going ESA-EO activities related to poss8ible future SAR instruments and attempts to identify mission altenatives in such a context. Of the particular relevance to a possible operational SAR mission is the `Call for Outline Earth Watch Mission Proposals' which represetns a novel approach to the future European EO strategy, the so-scalled 'Living Planet' programme (1).
