Through the layer by layer adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes steadily growing multilayer films can be constructed [1]. Especially for applications in the field of implantology natural polyelectrolytes like polypeptides (poly-L-lysine/PLL, poly-L-glutamic acid/PGA) and sulphated glycosamino-glycans (chondroitin sulphate/CS) display a high potential due to their wide biocompatibility. The latter may additionally aid the formation of calcium phosphate precipitates within the PEM film. However, PEM films composed of the highly swellable polysaccharides tend to display a low stiffness resulting in poor cell adhesion and proliferation [2,3]. We present an approach to rigidify PEM films containing polysaccharides. The rigidified films display a greater potential for cell adhesion and the synthesis of alkaline phosphatase secreted by osteoblasts.
