Stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HAp, Ca_(10)(PO_4)_6(OH)_2) coatings have been examined and commercially used as bioactive materials for fabricating biomedical implants. HAp coatings impart the biointegrated ability to the implants, namely chemical bonding between implants and bone tissue. The biointegration is essentially different from the osseointegration in direct contact between the titanium implant and bone tissue.
