GREENHOUSES GAS AND ENERGY BALANCE OF BIOENERGY CROPS FOR SOLID AND LIQUID BIOFUELS

Purpose of this work was to evaluate the greenhouses (GHG) budget and energy balance of severaltype of bioenergy crops, that have replaced sugar beet after the application of the EU sugar Common MarketOrganisation reform, to show their potentialities in mitigation effects. In the period 2008 - 2009 have beenmonitorated 347 new commercial energy crops for solid and liquid bio-fuels production, that cover totally 2591 ha allover the Italy. Species utilized are: poplar, black locust, eucalyptus, sunflower, sorghum, giant reed, Ethiopianmustard and rapeseed. In order to evaluate the GHG budget of these crops, data of biomass production (seeds and/ordry matter) and management practices were collected. The CO_2 stored by the vegetation, emission of CO_2, CH_4 andN_20 coming from fossil fuel combustion, production of fertilizers and pesticides were evaluated for all the sitesinvestigated. Considering above ground dry biomass and seeds production, GHG and energy balance result positivebut we still need to consider the effect of land use change on soil carbon content. Fertilizer production and irrigationseem to be the main sources of GHG emission.
