The final step in ethylene purification during its commercial production is usually the separation of ethylene from ethane by fractionation, in a C2 splitter column. This paper outlines the operating problems that were faced in C2 splitter columns in two different Ethylene Plants, and how troubleshooting was carried out successfully. Additionally, a valuable insight was obtained on using AspenPlus effectively for such systems, which was further consolidated during test runs, making it a powerful tool for effective troubleshooting.
