ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS ON INPUT DEVICES OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Nowadays, the use of a computer and consequently of input devices is widespread at many various workplaces. Even though operating input devices does not seem to require much muscular effort, this development of the last decades is accompanied by a rather newly and unforeseen emerging problem, the musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb. Therefore, the ergonomics of input devices came into the area of interest. Despite of existing national and international standards there still is a lack of precise, physiologically/biomechanically based criteria to evaluate the ergonomic suitability of input devices. In order to fill this gap, the VBG, the German Institution of statutory accident insurance in the field of administration, initiated a literature review on this issue that was conducted by the BGIA. Herewith first results of the ongoing study are outlined.
