ASSESSING AND MANAGING SHIFTWORK-RELATED FATIGUE: A PRACTICAL APPROACH

This paper explains why fatigue is considered to be an increasingly important issue and why it needs to be properly managed in the workplace. It draws on the risk assessment approach set out in HSE's new shift work guidance (Health & Safety Executive, 2006a). It also introduces the new Fatigue and Risk Index, which is a free to use tool that can be used to help in the risk assessment process. Understanding and use of these two new publications should help reduce levels of fatigue due to shift work and therefore contribute to reducing the associated accidents and ill-health.
