This work assessed the musculoskeletal disorder risks in kerbside recycling box handling. Data were collected on box weights, vehicle designs and worker postures. A computer model was used to calculate low back compression forces for a range of boxes lifted from a stooped posture. The optimum box weights, with and without a lid, were investigated in the laboratory. Box weights observed in the field ranged from 3 to 20 kg and a lid limited the optimum box weight by up to 4.8 kg. Collection workers had to adopt high risk postures at the vehicle that included sorting and tipping above shoulder height and twisting whilst lifting. Low back compression forces were in the region of 3.4 kN at a box weight of 13 kg. Recommendations to reduce the musculoskeletal risks include: where possible use wheeled bins, use a reduced capacity receptacle with a lid, and design vehicles to limit the number of high risk postures.
