EFFECTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT: THE ALI EXPERIENCE

The Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI) is the government inspectorate tasked with inspecting the quality and standard of publicly funded adult education and training in England and Wales. Three years ago the ALI decided to embark on a comprehensive programme of risk management. This paper will look at the process adopted by the ALI, the lessons learned from working with inspectors out on inspection and the way in which the ALI gained buy-in to change behaviours on all inspections. Health and safety issues became central to the management of inspections, ensuring that the ALI not only ensured a safe and healthy working environment for its inspectors, reduced injuries, incidents and sickness/absence but also made significant efficiency savings.
