Because of their long operational life, there is a continuing need to maintain and refurbish the operational equipment in nuclear power plants. This applies particularly to the human-machine interfaces. Any upgrades to the interfaces present the opportunity to improve the usability of the instrumentation by the application of modern ergonomics practice. A project at Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant has developed a prototyping and evaluation tool to be used by designers with ergonomics support to assess proposed control room changes. This paper reports initial evaluation exercises undertaken to improve the instrumentation of a typical plant system.
