Study on the optimal design of the Laos EHV power transmission line

This paper focuses on the description of the design optimization of the first 500kV transmission line in Laos. Combined with the actual meteorological conditions, geological conditions, hydrological conditions and altitude, etc along the transmission line, the tower optimisation is actually performed. This project has used the topographic map of the ZY-3 Satellite to optimize the path selection process and reduced the total line route length. The combination of galvanized steel strand and copper-clad steel grounding body has not only reduced the cost of EPC owner's investment, but also meet the requirement of owner of EDL. This project is the first one in Laos to adopt the combination of IEC standard, Chinese GB Standard and Laos domestic standard. Through calculation and comparison, this combination can meet the wind load requirement specified in the domestic standards of Laos. For the suspension towers with different wind spans and weight spans, in this project utilization of the suspension strings with different number of insulators under the different load conditions can reduce the investment of fittings to the great extent. The design methods introduced in this article has provided a sufficient reference for the transmission line designing in Lao P.D.R.
