A process has been developed to treat the copper gold ores from the Guelb Moghrein mine in Mauritania. The process consists of pressure leaching the sulphide concentrate, neutralising with the oxide ore, recovery of copper by SX/EW and of gold by cyanidation of the autoclave residue. This paper focuses on the pressure leaching step, and presents data from bench and pilot plant test programs. In particular, attention is drawn to the effects of temperature, grind size, neutralisation, retention time and solution recycle on the kinetics of copper dissolution from various flotation concentrates. Likely leach mechanisms are briefly discussed.
