The West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) is incorporating high-level waste (HLW) into a borosilicate glass to produce a stable waste form for placment in a nuclear waste repository. Fabrication of approximately 200 grams of fully loaded HLW glass has been accomplished using actual radioactive sludge from the WVDP located in West Valley, New York. The furnace was designed to simulate cold-crown melting and was used in a hot cell.
