Ocean will continue to be a key determinant for the future of humanity. Operational oceanography and delivery of information service to the society, government and industry especially in the context of sustainable development of the coastal and marine ecosystem, weather prediction, disaster management and environmental monitoring form a subset of larger socio-economic national objectives of the country.rnRecognising the imperative for a sustained ocean observing system for enhancing ocean predictability, significant efforts have been made by India in harnessing the potential of remote sensing satellites with complimentary in-situ observing systems including the recent concept of Argo floats. Significant progress has been achieved in deriving oceanic parameters from this observational system, however there are areas where considerable efforts for operationalisation, product development as well as R & D remains to be carried out over the coming years. On the scientific front, the challenge is to look at planet Earth as an integrated system comprising Land, Oceans and Atmosphere as well as their interactions, tele-connections and impact.
