Kraft mill waste minimization for total recycle of solid waste and byproducts

The Jefferon Smurfit Corporation Fernandina Beach MIll has establised a waste minimization program with a goal of 100 percent recycle of the solid waste and byproducts generated at the kraft mill and box plant complex. Initial emphasis was placed on major waste streams such as wastewater treatment sludge, boiler ash, and lime solids. Additional materials have been recycled in recent years to achieve the current level of 94.4 percent recycle. With the current program, the mill is expected to achieve 97 percent recycle in 1997 and 99.9 percent recycle in 1998.
