An airborne lidar system has been developed at Utah State University that demonstrated utility in landslide hazard mapping of the Logan Bluff area just off of the University campus. The system, called LASSI, is based on an eyesafe laser with a 1.54 um wavelength that can collect XYZ data from an aircraft at rates of up to 200,000 shots per second. It has demonstrated an RMS elevation error of about 2.5 inches and has the ability to penetrate and characterize vegetation. The lidar system is tightly integrated with an HD video camera that lays color data directly on top of the lidar shots. The results indicate that extremely small (scale of a few inches) and subtle landslide features including head scarps and bulges can be detected. Slope maps derived from the data are also described and have also been found to be instructive in understanding dominant slope processes and associated threshold slopes. This paper reviews the lidar development work then reports on the successful initial flight testing over the Logan Bluff landslide area.
