Temporary Multi-storey Container House after Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster on March 11, 2011

The project was the design development and construction of multi-storey temporary housing unitsrnas part of the disaster relief effort following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Ourrnobjective of the project was to find and commission an affordable temporary housing solution thatrncould be constructed rapidly to accommodate the residents who lost their houses due to thernearthquake and tsunami. The flatlands located above the tsunami height were limited in the townrnarea; thus, a viable multi-storeyrnsolution was required.rnConventional temporaryrnhousing units are a single storeyrnin Japan due to limited logisticsrnand technical ability in therndisaster area. Our challengernwas to propose multi-storeyrnhouses using stacked shippingrncontainers that would have thernbenefit of offsite prefabricationrnand logistics, using shippingrnand container trailers at the siternto create a multi-storey housernwith minimum on-site work. The container solution achieved our objectives perfectly.
