In the past years the use of microreaction technology has demonstrated its huge potential by providing promising new approaches for the improvement and intensification of chemical processes. Apart from greatly intensifying heat and mass transport in chemical processes the use of microreactors provides additional benefits with respect to process safety. As microreactors permit small hold-ups in the sub-milliliter range together with a highly precise continuous process management, the resultant improvements in safety are significant indeed compared to the conventional processing of strong exothermic or even explosible reactions.
