Interpretation of Observed Damper Performance in Mitigating Wind and Rain-Wind Induced Stay-Cable Vibrations

摘要

Excessive rain-wind induced vibrations have been a major problem for stays of cable-stayed bridges. To suppress the vibrations, dampers have often been used to supplement the low energy dissipation capability in the stays. It has been unclear whether or not the current guidelines for damper design are adequate or appropriate for field implementation. This paper describes an investigation of the mechanism of damper behavior by interpreting performance observed in a full-scale measurement project. Characteristics of observed vibrations are also summarized.
