Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. has been promoting the idea of increasing the capacity of LNG aboveground sotrage tanks in recent years with a view to increasing the utilization of existing LNG terminals and so gaining the economic benefits of increased scale. In view of the fact that the thickness of inner shell plate becomes larger with the increase of storage tank capacity, the highest priority was given to the task of investigating the brittle fracture initiation and arrest characteristics of heavy thickness 9 percent nickel steel plates and their welded joints.
