The paper presents the results of an experimental study on the strength, crack development and propagation, and deflection of concrete beams reinforced with ordinary steel bars having threaded ends that were tensioned against steel plates bearing on the concrete by means of tightening nuts. The beams were simply supported with a span-to-effective depth ratio of 16 and loaded at the third points. Cracking and failure loads were found to increase significantly as a result of the induced compressive stress in the concrete. Crack closure was noted on removal of the applied loads during cyclic loading. Crack widths and deflections were notably reduced at all loads up to failure.
