A Study on Strength and Deformation Behavior of Reinforced Fly Ash

Fly ash is being used for raising ash dykes and it is therefore important to study the strength deformation behavior of reinforced fly ash. In this particular work, an attempt has been made to study this particular aspect of the behavior so that ash dykes can be designed with better understanding of reinforced fly ash. Fly ash used is bottom ash obtained from Panki Thermal Power Plant in Kanpur, and the reinforcing material used was polypropylene produced and marketed by Netlon India Ltd., Bombay. The effect of orientation of reinforcement on strength-deformation behavior of reinforced fly ash has been studied by conducting direct shear tests on un-reinforced and reinforced fly ash samples with seven different orientations of reinforcement and at three different normal stresses. A simple and improved model has been proposed and using this model the extra shearing resistance provided by the reinforcement is calculated. The results obtained by experimental study are compared with the results predicted by using the proposed model. The strength ratio for the reinforced to unreinforced fly ash has been found to be more at lower normal stresses.
