In 2006 the solid state target of the spallationrnneutron source SINQ was replaced by the liquid metalrntarget MEGAPIE. In total the lead bismuth target was inrnoperation for 120 days. Currently the target is stored inrnthe target storage facility at SINQ. It is foreseen that nextrnyear MEGAPIE will be transported from PSI to the hotrncells of ZWILAG (Swiss central interim storage facility)rnfor inspection and dismantling as well as sample takingrnand preparation for final disposal. The target will be cutrninto pieces which then can be packed into a wasterncontainer. Samples will be taken for the investigation ofrnmaterial properties and the behavior of structuralrnmaterials in the high radiation field of a liquid metalrntarget. We will present an overview of the main handlingrnsteps and discuss the methods that are going to be usedrnfor the dismantling and final conditioning of the target.
