IAEA ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA OF PROTON ACCELERATOR APPLICATIONS

The IAEA accelerator related activities addressrnnuclear science and nuclear energy topics, and arernimplemented as a joint effort between the Departments ofrnNuclear Applications and Nuclear Energy. The IAEA isrnpursuing efforts on utilizing accelerators to support thernresearch, development and deployment of materials ofrnnuclear interest and concomitantly, the training andrnqualification of a highly educated nuclear workforce.rnAgeing studies on materials of nuclear interest to predictrntheir in-service behavior is an area of topical interest inrnnuclear science with the IAEA and its Member States, andrnin which accelerators can play a key role in analyticalrnapplications and in simulating radiation damage at fastrnfission and fusion relevant conditions. At the back end ofrnthe nuclear fuel cycle, environmental concerns linked withrnthe long half-life radioisotopes generated from nuclearrnfission have led to increased R&D efforts to develop arntechnology aimed at reducing the amount of radioactivernwaste through transmutation in either fast fission reactorsrnor accelerator driven systems. In the framework of thernproject on Technology Advances in Fast Reactors andrnAccelerator Driven Systems, the IAEA has implemented arnnumber of initiatives on utilization of plutonium andrntransmutation of long-lived radioactive waste, acceleratorrndriven systems, thorium fuel options, innovative nuclearrnreactors and fuel cycles, non-conventional nuclear energyrnsystems, and fusion/fission hybrids. This paper gives anrnoverview of IAEA's accelerator related activities inrnnuclear science for materials development, andrnpartitioning and transmutation of nuclear waste.
