The development of nuclear power engineering is related to the need to satisfy thernincreasing demands for electric power. This is currently being intensively implemented byrnincreasing the number of the power units, which are basically single-unit plants. Whilernensuring the same level of equipment reliability and operation quality at every power unit, thernpotential of an accident generally increases in proportion to the number of the power units.rnNuclear facilities are highly sophisticated systems, operated under conditions of variousrnhazards, the consequences of which may be disastrous for the life and health of the public andrnthe environment if the arrangements for safety assurance prove insufficient. Therefore, safetyrnassurance is an imperative for the activities carried out at nuclear facilities, which must bernregulated by the state and implemented by the operators. The objectives of this paper are tornprovide a general outlook of the existing hazards and the safety systems that are required torncounteract them, and to exchange ideas both on the existing challenges related to the formulationrnof a uniform safety concept and on the possible solutions to these problems.
