One of the important ways of treating soils contaminated by heavy metals has been the removal of the metal by chelation from a soil water slurry. The process chemistry as sociated with the capture and release of the metal and reuse of the organic chelator is complex and specific information concerning the activity of the chelator is often needed (Hong et al., 1995). The list of chelating substances is long and there is little information in the literature other than specific test information which will provide guidance to the worker as to the selection of the optimum chelator.
